The wholesale price of onion, which was around Rs 900 per quintal in July, has gone up to Rs 3,500 quintal, due to the post-monsoon rain that has damaged fresh crop in the fields.

The controlled supply of stored onion, which was harvested in March-April, and reduced supply of fresh onion have skyrocketed their prices. The onion prices in the retail market are hovering around Rs 40 per kg and are likely to remain high for the next few weeks.

According to Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), the supply of onion is low as most of the farmland is wet due to rain. The continuous downpour has damaged the yield because of which, supply of fresh onion from Ahmednagar, Nashik, Satara and some blocks of Pune district has gone down.
